About the University of Minnesota Department of Plant Pathology Endowment Fund
Endowment funds, privately contributed philanthropic gifts, play an important role in both public and private institutions of higher learning. As resources for higher education increasingly fluctuate and sometimes dwindle, endowment efforts are making a critical difference in many universities. Awareness of this fact led the Department to establish an endowment policy based upon privately contributed gifts prudently invested as trust funds. The interest generated from these trust funds is used to carry out the objectives of the gifts in perpetuity. Many alumni, faculty members, and friends of the Department have realized this vital need throughout the years and their generous support has greatly assisted the Department in its continuing efforts to maintain excellence in its academic endeavors.
Currently, the Department and its alumni and friends have established trust funds for the Plant Pathology Library, support for visiting scientists, student scholarships, achievement awards, and other means.
The Department has long had a specialized Plant Pathology Library, which is formally part of the University of Minnesota Library System. As with all special libraries, funding fluctuates with time and had become difficult to maintain. The existence of the Plant Pathology Library Endowment has made it not only possible to keep this valuable resource but to modernize and expand it into a new area of Borlaug Hall. At present, however, the Endowment still lacks sufficient funding, and interest from other endowments is helping support this valuable resource. Until this fund is able to support our full commitment, it will continue to be a priority. We have established a fund specifically for library acquisitions to honor Clyde M. and Katherine B. Christensen. - excerpt from Endowment brochure
